TRENCH

TRENCH is a twelve-bench series installed along Ui Stream. Its ten modular shapes are systemized and assembled to become twelve unique semi-circular benches of differing heights and shapes where people can rest. With its gentle curves and smooth surfaces, TRENCH embraces all who use it, from children to the elderly.

트렌치는 2021년 우이천에 설치된 12가지의 벤치 시리즈 입니다. 10가지 모듈은 휴식이 필요한 환경에 따라서 다양한 높이와 형태를 가진 반원 형태의 벤치로 조립됩니다. 완만한 곡선과 매끄러운 소재의 트렌치는 부드러운 형태로, 아이부터 노인까지 모두에게 편안한 공공시설물을 지향합니다.

From A to J, TRENCH has 10 different modules. Each module was designed for a specific purpose. A, B, C, D Modules designed solely for sitting, E, F Modules for the purpose of connecting different heights ,G, H, I, J Modules for the purpose of connecting to the ground in a curved form.

트렌치 모듈은 A부터 J까지 총 10가지 종류로 나뉘어져 있습니다. 각각의 모듈은 특별한 역할을 맡고 있습니다. 앉는 목적을 가진 두가지 높이의 A, B, C, D, 서로 다른 높이를 연결시키는 E, F ,설치면에 곡선 형태로 연결되는 G, H, I, J.

TRENCH's greatest strength lies in its infinite combination possibilities. The combinations that can be created with its ten curved modules are endless. Unlike typical straight benches, TRENCH brings people together around the center with its curved form. Depending on the character of the space, TRENCH can be expanded into various combinations, such as an elongated format or a completely round format. Installing TRENCH in squares, parks, and other public spaces can provide a place for communal gatherings.

트렌치의 가장 큰 장점은 다양한 조합 가능성에 있습니다. 10가지의 곡선 모듈로 만들어 낼 수 있는 조합은 일반적인 직선 형태의 벤치가 아닌 곡선의 형태로 시민들을 한가운데로 모으는 역할을 합니다. 공간의 특징에 따라 길게 또한 동그랗게, 다양한 형태로 풀어낼 수 있습니다. 광장, 공원, 공공장소 등 휴식할 수 있는 곳에 설치하여 사용하는 시민들에게 모임의 공간을 제공합니다.

25 Episodes of Seoul; The initial design proposal of the Gangbuk-gu Bench was different from the final design. While sharing a modular concept and materials with the final one, the previous design was supported by a powder-coated pipe and anchored in the ground. And, the bench had a table height of 900mm and a seat height of 450mm that allows citizens to sit and relax or enjoy a drink or snack while standing. In terms of form, the initial proposal had a 19m long, wave-shaped design among the two previous proposals, and the second proposal was a circular shape surrounding a cherry blossom tree. However, discussions with the Gangbuk-gu Safety Dimensions Division revealed liabilities like prohibiting the transplanting, unanticipated safety issues, frequent ooding of the Ui Stream, and the strict River Act in South Korea. The actual scope of the project is to only replace/design benches on the site but nothing else. There were too many restrictions, such as not allowing to relocate current outdoor fitness equipment and limiting the pavement material to change. Therefore, after several meetings with the project advisory committee and the borough representatives, the design was continuously revised and finalized into singular concrete modules to facilitate construction efficiency, follow-up management and according to site compliance. Our team adjusted the final design of the modules in height, shape, size, quantity, combination, and arrangement for the council approval. TRENCH modules can be arranged and assembled in different ways, like LEGO® blocks, which allow customizable designs according to the specifications of the located site. Beyond the Ui Stream site in Korea, these flexible modules can be utilized in versatile combinations and installed in various locations, such as parks and squares, with the potential to become public benefits contributing to urban revitalization.

서울, 25부작; 강북구 벤치 공모의 당선작은 현재의 디자인과는 달랐습니다. 선정 초기의 TRENCH 디자인은 벤치와 함께 테이블을 사용할 수 있도록 두 가지의 높이를 가진 하나의 형태로서 우이천에서의 휴식시간을 즐길 수 있는 다양한 모습을 그렸습니다. 물결 형태의 1안은 길이 19M의 벤치이고, 벚꽃나무를 감싸 안는 원형 형태의 2안은 테이블 높이 900mm와 앉는 높이 450mm의 벤치입니다. 초기의 디자인은 최종 디자인의 모듈 개념, 재질 면에서 동일하지만 벤치의 좌판을 지지하는 구조물이 분체도장 파이프라는 점에서 달랐습니다. 강북구 안전치수과, 프로젝트 자문단, 해당 자치구와 함께 의논하여 안전 문제, 우이천의 범람 가능성과 하천법을 고려한 결과, 시공의 효율성을 높이고 사후관리의 용이성을 고려하여 TRENCH는 콘크리트 일체형의 벤치로 설계되었습니다. TRENCH 모듈들은 서로의 곁을 계속해서 이어나가는 형태를 가졌습니다. 이는 휴식이 필요한 환경의 조건에 알맞게 맞추어 설치될 수 있다는 강점을 보여줍니다. TRENCH는 우이천을 시작으로 또 다른 공원과 광장 등에서 새로운 형태로 적용되어 도시재생을 위한 공공시설물이 되기를 기대합니다.
